Breast Cancer Walk

The 8th annual Ladies of Port Richmond Breast Cancer Walk will be held on Sunday, May 20 at 10 a.m., at the Monkiewicz Recreation Center playground on East Allegheny Avenue at Richmond Street. Rain or shine.

Warm-up exercises will begin at 9:30 a.m. Come see special guests the Philly Phantic and the Camden Riversharks! Pre-registration is $30 in advance, $35 day-of (day-of registration at 8:30 a.m.).

To pre-register, visit the Port Richmond Plaza Thriftway from 9 a.m. to p.m. on Saturday, May 5, or the Monkiewicz Recreation Center playground on Saturday, May 12th from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

All funds go toward Jefferson University Hospital breast cancer research, Nazareth Hospital breast cancer awareness and education, and Holy Redeemer Health System’s breast cancer treatment equipment. For more information call Mary Lou at (215) 427–3222. ••

FABA set to meet

The Fishtown Area Business Association will host its monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 2 at 6 p.m. at Finanta, located at 1301 N. 2nd St. The meeting will focus on networking and helping businesses grow. During the evening, PennDOT’s construction management team for the I-95 Girard Avenue Interchange Project will provide an update on current and upcoming Richmond Street and Girard Avenue construction activities. SKCP to meet

The South Kensington Community Partners will host its monthly meeting on Monday, May 7, at 6:30 p.m., at the SKCP offices, located at 1301 N. 2nd St. Residents are invited to discus neighborhood nuisances, report on problem properties, and discuss neighborhood crime trends with representatives from the 26th district police who will be on hand during the meeting.

Also, thanks to the Temple Urban Archives, the KSCP will be screening Assignment: 1747 Randolph Street (Part 1), the first half-hour of a sometimes-challenging 1966 documentary about poverty in North Philadelphia. ••

‘Facets’ to open at Cerulean

Cerulean Arts Gallery and Studio, at 1355 Ridge Ave., will host a new show, “Facets,” from artists Michael Smith and Linda Billet from May 9 through June 9. An opening reception will be held on Friday, May 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. and there will be a “meet the artists” event on Sunday, May 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. The show is free and open to the public. ••

Walk for MS

There will be a Walk for Multiple Sclerosis on May 5 at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Fishtown resident Kathy Tiscavitch, who copes with MS, is seeking sponsors to help raise money to benefit research for a cure to the illness. Cione trip to New Hampshire

There will be a four-day, three-night trip from the Cione Playground at Aramingo and Lehigh avenues to Lincoln, N.H., from Oct. 18 to 21. Tigers teeball signups

The Port Richmond Tigers have closed signups for the baseball and softball teams, but there is still room for teeball.

Girls and boys, ages 4 through 6, can sign up now at the Tigers clubhouse, Chatham and Ann streets, Monday through Friday from 6:30 to 8 p.m., or by calling Tom Mack at 215–275–8838. ••

FNA Zoning meeting

On Tuesday, May 8, at 7p.m., the zoning committee of the Fishtown Neighbors Association will meet to discuss a proposal for seven three-story single-family homes with interior parking for 1235–47 Crease Street. All meetings are held at the Fishtown Rec. Center, located at 1202 E. Montgomery Ave. ••

Food for the needy

The Bridesburg Rec. Center is seeking donations of food for their food bank. The center, located at 4625 Richmond Street, is open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. on weekdays. Food donations will be accepted anytime the center is open. ••

Bridesburg Historical Society to meet

The next meeting of the Bridesburg Historical Society will be held on Wednesday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m. at All Saints’ Marian Hall, on the northwest corner of Edgemont and Buckius streets. Steven Kozakowski will speak on “How Bridesburg Became Part of Philadelphia.” Admission is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. ••

OLPR scholarship applications

Applications for the Gerry M. Heckler, Jr. Scholarship are now available to eighth-grade students at Our Lady of Port Richmond school. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded for the students’ freshman year at a Catholic high school. Students should ask their teachers for the application, and the deadline to apply is May 13.••

Music for the Mummers

Mummers Museum Doo-wop Extravaganza: Friday, May 11 from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. at the museum, 1100 S. Second St. With radio station 92.1’s Jimmy Depre, three live bands, a light buffet and a cash bar, tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. All proceeds benefit the Mummers Museum. Community theatre

New Freedom Theatre presents Khalil Munir’s play “1 Pound, 4 Ounces,” which tells the story of how the arts transformed a young man’s life in the Philadelphia community. Dinner, dancing and memories

St. John Cantius School celebrates “A Night of Memories” on Saturday, June 2 at 6 p.m. with the Buddy Starling Big Band and a full dinner spread (BYOB). Palmer Park flower sale

The Friends of Fishtown are bringing back the Palmer Park Flower Sale.

On Saturday, May 12 at 10 a.m. members of the group will be selling flowering plants in Palmer Park at Columbia and Frankfrod avenues. All proceeds raised from the sale will go toward the maintenance and improvement of Palmer Park. ••

Garden party

On Friday, May 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. visitors are invited to tour Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary church’s award-winning garden, on Kensington Avenue between B St. and Lehigh Ave. to enjoy art work made by school students.

Admission costs $25 and includes beer, wine and light hors d’oeuvres.

All proceeds benefit the students of Visitation.

Dog day at Penn Treaty Park

On Saturday, May 5, at 10 a.m., the Friends of Penn Treaty Park invite all neighbors to bring their dog down to Penn Treaty Park at Delaware and Columbia avenues. Rain date is May 6. Dog treats will be provided, but please bring your own water. ••

Clothesline art contest

The Friends of Penn Treaty Park will host the annual Clothesline Art Contest, on Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. until noon. Children from pre-school age up to 16 are invited to participate. Justice for Wayne Walk

At 10 a.m. on July 28th, there will be a march in memory of Wayne Ellis. He was shot and killed while on his was home on July 28 in 2002 at Belgrade Street and Frankford Ave. He left behind a daughter, as well as tons of friends and family who are haunted by questions. His family said that it was his mother’s dying wish to know who killed her son.

They seek 100 or more people to join in the walk. Everyone is welcome. Afterwards they are going to have a block party at 2310 E. Fletcher St. The walk will begin at Front and Spring Garden streets and head to Frankford Ave. at Belgrade St.

It costs $10 per person to participate in the walk, and $20 to attend the beef and beer if you don’t participate in the memorial walk. Any donations or sponsors would be greatly appreciated.
