Breast Cancer Walk

The 8th annual Ladies of Port Richmond Breast Cancer Walk will be held on Sunday, May 20 at 10 a.m., at the Monkiewicz Recreation Center playground on East Allegheny Avenue at Richmond Street. Rain or shine.

Warm-up exercises will begin at 9:30 a.m. Come see special guests the Philly Phantic and the Camden Riversharks! Pre-registration is $30 in advance, $35 day-of (day-of registration at 8:30 a.m.).

To pre-register, visit the Monkiewicz Recreation Center playground on Saturday, May 12th from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Those who wish to pledge money can find pledge forms at http://ladiesofportrichmond.com.

All funds go toward Jefferson University Hospital breast cancer research, Nazareth Hospital breast cancer awareness and education, and Holy Redeemer Health System breast cancer treatment equipment. For more information call Mary Lou at (215) 427–3222. ••

Flea Market at Penn Treaty Park

The Friends of Penn Treaty Park will host a flea market at the park on Saturday, May 19 at from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Tables available for $15. Fees due by May 12. Penn Treaty Park celebration

The Friends of Penn Treaty Park will host the annual Clothesline Art Contest, on Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. until noon. Children from pre-school age up to 16 are invited to participate. The contest will be held at Penn Treaty Park at Delaware and Columbia avenues. The park will also celebrate its newly-appointed inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places with awards and speakers that day. OLPR scholarship applications

Applications for the Gerry M. Heckler, Jr. Scholarship are now available to eighth-graders at Our Lady of Port Richmond school. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded for the students’ freshman year at a Catholic high school. Students should ask their teachers for the application, and the deadline to apply is May 13. ••

Senior Center flea market

Port Richmond Leadership Team

Port Richmond West Community Action Network is seeking members to serve on the “Leadership Team.” The group’s boundaries are between Frankford Avenue and Aramingo Avenue and Lehigh Avenue and East Westmoreland Street. If you live, work or own a business there you are eligible to serve on the team, which makes policies and determines direction. Annual Italian Festival

Mother of Divine Grace in Port Richmond is holding its annual Italian Festival May 31 and June 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9 on the school grounds. The festival is open from 4:30 p.m. until close, with Italian dinners beginning in the school hall at 5 p.m. The festival brings together family friends and neighbors in the community for food, casino games, a beer garden and lots of good times. The school is located at 2612 E. Monmouth St., at the corner of E. Cambria and E. Thompson streets. ••

New Portside Arts Center Classes

Saturdays starting May 5, the Portside Arts Center at 2531 E. Lehigh Ave. will be offering new classes like “Mommy & Me Arts-N-Crafts,” children’s arts and crafts, cartoon illustration, a basic tool class, and a basic Computer Class. Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby

Saturday, May 19, 12 to 6 p.m. at the intersection of Trenton Ave. and Norris St. The 6th Annual Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby (KKSD) is a design competition and parade of human-powered vehicle floats which will take place during this year’s Trenton Avenue Arts Festival on May 19 (TAAF). Both the TAAF and the KKSD need artist participation to make them come alive! Justice for Wayne Walk

At 10 a.m. on July 28th, there will be a march in memory of Wayne Ellis. He was shot and killed while on his was home on July 28 in 2002 at Belgrade Street and Frankford Ave. He left behind a daughter, as well as tons of friends and family who are haunted by questions. His family said that it was his mothers dying wish to know who killed her son.

In the 10 years since his death the family claims they have no answers. The march hopes to break the silence.

They seek 100 or more people to join in the walk. Everyone is welcome. Afterwards we are going to have a block party (a beef and beer) at 2310 E. Fletcher St.

The walk will begin at Front and Spring Garden streets and head to Frankford Ave. at Belgrade St.

It costs $10 per person to participate in the walk and beef and beer. You will receive a bracelet and t-shirt.

It will cost $20 to attend the beef and beer if you don’t participate in the memorial walk.

The family will be selling shirts, bracelets, raffle tickets and baskets.

Any donations or sponsors would be greatly appreciated.

Cione trip to New Hampshire

There will be a four-day, three-night trip from the Cione Playground at Aramingo and Lehigh avenues to Lincoln, N.H., from Oct. 18 to 21. FNA Zoning meeting

On Tuesday, May 8, at 7p.m., the zoning committee of the Fishtown Neighbors Association will meet to discuss a proposal for seven three-story single-family homes with interior parking for 1235–47 Crease Street. Food for the needy

The Bridesburg Rec. Center is seeking donations of food for their food bank. The center, located at 4625 Richmond Street, is open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. on weekdays. Food donations will be accepted anytime the center is open. ••

Free museum admission for Mom

The National Museum of American Jewish History invites visitors to explore questions of identity and heritage through the photographs of Alina and Jeff Bliumis in an exhibit, “Casual Conversations,” which opened to the public Sunday, May 6. NoLibs Food Tour

Treat mom to a tour of five Northern Liberties’ restaurants and cafes. Treat mom to an afternoon at the theate to catch the last performance of New Freedom Theatre presentation of Khalil Munir’s play “1 Pound, 4 Ounces,” which tells the story of how the arts transformed a young man’s life in the Philadelphia community.
