EKNA zoning meeting
Tonight, Oct. 10, at 7:15 p.m., the East Kensington Neighbors Association will hold a zoning meeting open to the public at Circle of Hope Church at 2007 Frankford Ave.
Three cases will be heard; 2119 E Cumberland St., an addition to an existing building to create a three unit, six bedroom building with no open area; 2015 Martha St., a single family dwelling seeking a variance for an open area, and 1917–1919 and 1921–1945 E. Hagert St., a proposal for 40 units of senior housing. ••
Bridesburg Historical Society to meet
The next meeting of the Bridesburg Historical Society will be tonight, October 10, at 7:30p.m., at All Saints Marian Hall, on the northwest corner of Edgemont and Buckius streets.

Troop 120 toy drive
Alexander Korn, a Life Scout of Boy Scout Troop 120, is organizing a toy drive for his Eagle Scout project.
The toys will be collected, wrapped and delivered at Christmas to homeless children in the transitional housing complex Visitation Homes, at 2638 Kensington Ave.
Children’s ages are from 1 to 10. Anyone wishing to contribute toys can drop them off at 4536 Almond St., or call 215–289–2456 to arrange for pickup. Collection will run through Dec. 10. ••
John J. Taylor’s Senior Expo
State Rep. John Taylor’s Senior Expo will be held Friday, Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cohox Recreation Center, Cedar and Cambria streets.
Taylor has been hosting this event for 27 years; this year over 700 area seniors are expected to attend.
Expect to see representatives from the Philadelphia Police Department, PECO, insurance companies, medical companies, veteran agencies and many others. Blood pressure and cholesterol tests will also be available, plus free massages.
Transportation pickups will be available throughout the district; pickups will be at St. Anne’s Senior Center, Juniata Older Adults Center, Bridesburg Rec. Center and Our Ladies of Port Richmond beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Outdoor prayer service
On Friday, Oct. 12 at 1 p.m., there will be a Rosary for America outdoor prayer service at Our Lady of Knock Shrine, Holy Name of Jesus Rectory, Berks and Gaul streets.

Fall River Ward cleanup
Join the River Ward community groups FNA, EKNA, ORCA, NKCDC and PROPAC for the annual fall cleanup on Oct. 13.
Join the groups at 9 a.m. at one of the following locations: Fishtown Rec Center, 1202 E. Montgomery; East Kensington, York and Coral streets; Olde Richmond, Huntingdon and Aramingo Avenue; Port Richmond, Richmond and Tioga (meeting at 9:30 a.m.); NKCDC Garden Center, Frankford and Berks.
Please bring gloves if you have them. All participants are invited to join us at Philadelphia Brewing Company for a BBQ after the cleanup (vegetarian options provided).

Port Richmond breast cancer fundraiser
On Sunday, Oct. 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Ladies of Port Richmond will host a breakfast buffet to raise funds for breast cancer research.

Celtic tea event
LAOH Division 51 is sponsoring a Celtic tea at Holy Name Church Hall, 701 Gaul St., on Sunday, Oct. 14, from noon to 3 p.m.

Outdoor movie at Penn Treaty Park
On Thursday, Oct. 19, join neighbors and friends under the stars. The show will start at 6:30 p.m. and will be a fun night for the family. Bring your own blanket or chairs and popcorn. Movie will be announced that night. ••
Frank Glavin flea market
A flea market will be held at Frank Glavin Playground, 2600 Westmoreland St., on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $10 per space for vendors.

St. Joan of Arc reunion
The church invites the class of 1962 to its 50th reunion on Sunday, Oct. 21. Mass will begin at noon at the church, located at 2025 E. Atlantic St. A dinner will follow until 5 p.m. at Casbah Caterers, located at Thompson and Tioga streets.

Fall sports at Shissler Rec
Applications are now being accepted for fall sports at Shissler Rec., including basketball for boys and girls ages 10 to 13 and men’s indoor soccer. Cost is $300 per team. Money is due by Nov. 9.

Fishtown Spelling Bee
The 11th annual Fishtown Spelling Bee will be presented by Fishtown Action and the Penn Treaty Special Services District.
The bee will take place on Oct. 26 at 3:30 p.m. at Shissler Rec. Center, 1800–56 Blair St. The competition will begin at 4 p.m. It is open to all students, regardless of school.
Competition will be co-ed and broken into the following age levels: grades 2 to 4, grades 5 to 6 and grades 7 to 8. Prizes will be awarded to the top three spellers in each age group.
The winners will get a pizza party for their classrooms. To prepare, the organizers suggest both in-school competitions and studying pages such as www.spelling-words-well.com. ••
Polish cultural fundraiser
