PTSSD seeks board member

The Penn Treaty Special Services District is requesting letters of interest and background information from individuals who would like to fill its current Northern Liberties vacancy on the Board of Directors.

In order to qualify, you must be a resident of Northern Liberties for no less than five consecutive years and available to meet on the third Wednesday of the month (Sept. through June) from roughly 6 to 9 p.m. This is a volunteer position. Submit letter of interest no later than Monday, Oct. 29 to Kerry Auge, PTSSD Administrator, via email: kauge@penntreatyssd.com. ••

St. Anne’s music society

Music director Mr. Nick Pignataro wants all musicians and singers to join an all-new music society at St. Anne’s Church on Tuesdays. This will be a special group of individuals wishing to sing or play instruments in at least two concerts each year.

The church is located at Lehigh and Memphis streets, in the heart of Port Richmond. The group will meet on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. It will be an all-volunteer, all-denomination community music society. For more information, call 215–426–8422. ••

Frank Glavin flea market

A flea market will be held at Frank Glavin Playground, 2600 Westmoreland St., on Saturday, Oct. 20, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $10 for vendors.

Booth space will be available on Almond and Westmoreland street. Bring your own table. No food vendors.

Instruction and activities at the playground include: an after school program, dance, tumbling, Tae Kwon Do, Girl Scouts, Zumba and competition dance. For information on programs, contact 215–685–9898. ••

Girl Scouts at Frank Glavin

The Girl Scouts are meeting at Frank Glavin Playground, at 2600 Westmoreland St. The playground has openings in its Brownie and Junior troops. Brownies, girls in second and third grades, meet on Monday nights from 6:45 to 8. Juniors, girls in fourth through sixth grades, meet on Wednesday nights from 6:45 to 8.

A registration fee of $12 is required to join. For more info., stop by the playground during troop meetings. ••

Konrad Square flea market

The Friends of Konrad Square will host a flea market on Saturday Oct. 20, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Konrad Square, Tulip and Dauphin streets. Anyone interested in renting a space should call Vicky at 215–426–9654. ••

St. Joan of Arc reunion

The church invites the class of 1962 to its 50th reunion on Sunday, Oct. 21. Mass will begin at noon at the church, 2025 E. Atlantic St. A dinner will follow until 5 p.m. at Casbah Caterers, located at Thompson and Tioga streets.

Fall sports at Shissler Rec

Applications are now being accepted for fall sports at Shissler Rec., including basketball for boys and girls ages 10 to 13 and men’s indoor soccer. Cost is $300 per team. Money is due by Nov. 9.

A women’s 19-years-old and over indoor soccer league is also taking applictions. Cost is $300 per team, and must be paid by Oct. 26.

Philly Photo Day

On Oct. 26, the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center invites everyone in Philadelphia to take a photo on the same day. Every picture received will be printed and hung for a unique exhibition of a day in the life of Philadelphia.

In addition to the main exhibition, select photographs will be exhibited on buses, trains and billboards throughout the city. Upload photos at www.philaphotoarts.org.

The Fishtown Community Branch of the Free Library of Philadelphia, at 1217 E. Montgomery Ave., is a community partner for this event.

From 2 to 5 p.m. that day, the library will host a teaching artist who will bring cameras and teach a basic photography curriculum.

PPAC’s cameras will be limited, so if possible, bring your own digital camera or cell phone camera, as well as the associated cord to download images. ••

Fishtown Spelling Bee

The 11th annual Fishtown Spelling Bee will be presented by Fishtown Action and the Penn Treaty Special Services District. The bee will take place on Oct. 26 at Shissler Rec. Center, 1800–56 Blair St. Doors open at 3:30 p.m., and the competition will begin at 4 p.m.

It is open to all students, regardless of school. Competition will be co-ed and broken into the following age levels: grades 2 to 4, grades 5 to 6 and grades 7 to 8. The winners will get a pizza party for their classrooms. ••

Penn Treaty Park flea market

Join the friends group Saturday, Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the park, Columbia and Delaware avenues. Flea market spaces are available for $15; fees due no later than Oct. 20.

Halloween at La Finquita

On Oct. 20, La Finquita, “The Little Farm,” at Master and Lawrence streets, will have a “Pumpkin Party” with pumpkin-carving, face-painting and farm tours from noon to 3 p.m. A “Freaky Fundraiser” party and costume contest will take place from 8 p.m. to midnight.

Fishtown Halloween party

FACT (Fishtown Action) is having a “make your own sundae” Halloween Party on Sunday, Oct. 28. The party is for children ages 10 and under.

Wear your costume and make a sundae. Doors open at 2 p.m. at Holy Name Church Hall, 701 Gaul St., the cost is $3 per person. ••

Polish cultural fundraiser

Applebee’s, at 2535 Castor Ave., will host a fundraiser pancake breakfast to support the Polish American Cultural Center on Oct. 27, from 8 to 10 a.m. Cost is $5 per person. For more information, call Theresa Romanowski at 215–922–1700. ••

PROPAC/PRTW to meet

The next meeting of Port Richmond on Patrol and Civic and Port Richmond Town Watch will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Samuel Rec. Center, Gaul and Tioga streets.

The group will vote for PROPAC board members and discuss items of community interest. There will also be a representative from the 24th Police District to go over area crime statistics. ••

Breast cancer awareness

Nazareth Hospital and the Ladies of Port Richmond will present a breast cancer education and awareness event on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 4:30 p.m. at at Richmond Hall, 2619 E. Indiana Ave.
