Fishtown soccer tryouts

The Fishtown Americans U-8 soccer team will have the last night of tryouts tonight at 6:30 p.m., at Shissler Recreation Center, 1800 Blair St. All are encouraged to attend. A mandatory of two tryouts are required to be considered for the team. Players are required to bring a size four soccer ball filled with air, and an ample supply of water. Irish Night featuring Blackthorn

On Thursday, July 18, at 6 p.m., visit Campbell Square in Port Richmond for Irish Night, with music by the band Blackthorn. Campbell Square is located at Belgrade Street and Allegheny Avenue.

This event is co-sponsored by the Friends of Campbell Square and the Peter J. Hanlon Jingle Bell Run. The Friends are asking everyone to bring canned goods and/or non-perishable items to the event, which will be donated to the Bridesburg Food Bank. ••

FNA hosts Penn Treaty principal

Join the Fishtown Neighbors Association for its July general membership meeting on Thursday, July 18 at 7 p.m., at the Fishtown Recreation Center, 1202 E. Montgomery Ave. The FNA will be joined by Sam Howell, principal of Penn Treaty School, which is expanding from a middle school to a 6–12 grade school this September. Principal Howell will explain a few of the ways the school is considering the impact of these changes on the blocks surrounding the school. ••

Peg McCook Sports Tournament

The Margaret “Peg” McCook sports tournament will be held July 19, 20, and 21 at Cione Playground (Lehigh and Aramingo avenues) and Cohox Playground (Cedar and Cambria streets). Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society and scholarships for students.

Events, with registration costs, include men’s and women’s softball, basketball and soccer ($125 each), youth soccer ($100), youth basketball ($75), a 5K run on July 20 ($30), and horseshoes ($25 per thrower). Bridesburg United Methodist concert

Bridesburg United Methodist Church, 2717 Kirkbride St. (between Richmond and Thompson streets) will host a summer concert and dinner on Saturday, July 20 from 6:30 p.m. until closing.

Dinner will consist of spaghetti and meatballs, tossed salad, beverage and dessert, with the concert afterwards. To purchase tickets, call Joan at 215–941–8873. ••

FNA zoning meeting

The Fishtown Neighbors Association will discuss zoning issues on Tuesday, July 23, beginning at 6:30 p.m., with a discussion about a second floor for an existing café at 2349 Belgrade St. At 7 p.m., the group will discuss 2327 Gaul St., and revised plans for 1027 Marlborough St. and 320 Wildey St. at 7:30. These meetings will take place at the Fishtown Rec Center, 1202 E Montgomery Ave. All residents of Fishtown are eligible to vote. ••

Port Richmond Community Group to meet

On Thursday, July 25 at 7 p.m., join the PRCG at Our Lady Help of Christians church hall, Allegheny Avenue and Gaul Street, for the monthly meeting. The group will discuss and vote on the Kintock Group moving its headquarters to 2121 Wheatsheaf Lane, as well as zoning issues at 3011 Witte St. and 2036 Castor Ave. John Taylor and Marc Collazzo will be in attendance. The 25th annual Sean Daily Tournament

The Port Richmond Tigers will sponsor the 25th annual Sean Daily Memorial Sports Tournament on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 26, 27 and 28. Featured events will include men’s and women’s softball, basketball, soccer (all ages) and women’s volleyball.

Konrad Square flea market

The Friends of Konrad Square will host a flea market on July 27, at Konrad Square, Tulip and Dauphin streets, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anyone interested in renting a space should call Vicky at 215–426–9654. There will also be flea markets August 10 and 24. ••

St. Adalbert Summer Bazaar

Everyone is invited to the St. Adalbert parish bazaar on Thursday, August 1, Friday, August 2 and Saturday, August 3, beginning at 6 p.m. each night on the parish grounds, Allegeheny Avenue and Thompson Street.

Join the community for fun, a flea mearket, Polish and Amerian foods, dancing, sweets and more. On Thursday, enjoy the Polish American String Band. On Friday, the Paging Samuel Band will entertain, and on Saturday, enjoy continental Polish music. The bazaar will take place rain or shine. ••

St. Anne’s ‘Shore Thing’

Join the St. Anne’s parish community August 17, from 2 to 6 p.m., for the 11th annual Shore Thing at Lighthouse Pointe, 5101 Shawcrest Ave. in Wildwood, N.J. All proceeds benefit St. Anne church, which needs repairs. Tickets are $30 per person and include beer, wine and soda. Advanced purchasing is encouraged. SugarHouse Summer Food Truck Series

The SugarHouse Casino and Philadelphia Mobile Food Association have teamed up again this year for the continuation of their Summer Food Truck Series.

Fairhill Square Park farmer’s market

On Tuesdays through October, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Fairhill Square Park, 4th Street and Lehigh Avenue, enjoy a weekly farmer’s market.

Scoop up fresh, affordable fruits and vegetables and take part in different free activities each week, including cooking demonstrations, children’s games, Zumba classes, face painters, performances and more. Presented by the Women’s Community Revitalization Project. ••

Help out your local Girl Scouts

The Girl Scouts at Glavin Playground are excited to be attending the Disney World Youth Educational Series learning program in June 2014. The Parent Committee is coordinating fundraising events for the trip throughout the upcoming year.

For now, the Scouts are asking the community to save aluminum cans and other recyclable metals starting now through Saturday, August 17. Take your cans to Sullivan Recycling, 3361 Edgemont St., and mention that your recyclables are for the Girl Scout fundraiser at Glavin Playgound.

On Saturday, August 17, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., the Girl Scouts will be available at Sullivan Recycling to accept items. A percentage of all the funds raised will be earmarked to give to the Ronald McDonald House at St. Christopher’s Hospital, and to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
