At the Port Richmond Community Group meeting on July 25, neighborhood residents Bill Mason and Matt Pizzola officially announced the date of the first Port Richmond “Second Saturday” event: Saturday, Aug. 10, from 5 to 9 p.m., on Richmond Street between Allegheny Avenue and E. Clearfield Street.

The free event, sponsored by Sweets & Treats, 3138 Richmond St., is meant to be Port Richmond’s own version of the popular citywide “First Friday” event, and will feature live music from Dependent and This Duo, a classic car show — if you have a classic car you’d like to show off, email [email protected] — and food from Port Richmond’s own The Tot Cart, Gigi & Big R, the Kami food truck and Krakus Market.

Donna’s Bar will provide a Polish beer gardent, and other beer will be provided by Harpoon Brewery and Philadelphia Brewing Company.

Others participating include: Port Richmond Books, Breathing Room Yoga Studio, Grandma’s Candle Castle, Kasher Kreations, Trophy Bikes and more.

“I was tired of going to NoLibs or Fishtown for stuff to do on the weekends,” Pizzola said at the PRCG meeting, when asked why he and Mason teamed up to help create the event. “We want to stay here to have fun.”

In a joint statement, Mason, Pizzola and Sweets & Treats owner Wayne Bullock said:

“For far too long, Richmond Street has been ignored and neglected, with talk of its glory days being a thing of the past, but times are changing, and a movement is slowly underway! A new burst of energy has come along, with a handful of diverse shops opening up, and older businesses updating,” it said.

“For years,” it continued, “Local residents have talked of Richmond Street becoming ‘Main Street’ again; and that idea is slowly being realized. Join us as we try and incorporate Second Saturday into a regular Richmond Street event for the entire community, not only to help maintain its growth, but spark its revival!”
