Stanley A. Gogoj

On Monday morning, Port Richmond honored one of its own as part of a Veterans Day memorial service.

The Korean War Veterans Chapter 38 donated a plaque that was dedicated Monday in Campbell Square — the plaque honors Private First Class Stanley A. Gogoj, a member of the 71st Signal Service Battalion in the U.S. Army, who died June 30, 1950, while serving in Korea.

Gogoj was the first person from Philadelphia to be killed in action in Korea during the war.

Star previously reported on Gogoj, as a Fishtown veteran named John Plenskofski had the plaque in his possession, and wanted to include it as part of the city’s Korean War Veterans Memorial, but was unable to. Now, the plaque is part of the neighborhood from which Gogoj hailed.

Gogoj was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Union Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

At Monday’s ceremony in Campbell Square, State Rep. John Taylor (R-177th dist.) and Councilman Bobby Henon (D-6th dist.) participated in the wreath laying ceremony that honored Gogoj and all veterans, living and deceased. ull;•
