Senior program seeks volunteers
RSVP Philadelphia, a senior corps program, is looking for volunteers, 55-years and older, working or retired, to package and/or deliver meals to homebound seniors throughout the Philadelphia area, according to a press release from the program.
“As we draw closer to the holiday season, we are receiving more and more requests from homebound seniors who are no longer able to shop and cook for themselves,” says Julie Borsky, assistant director of RSVP, which is headquartered at the Klein JCC in Northeast Philadelphia.
“As a result of this increased demand for our Home Delivered Meals Program we need more volunteers to package meals which are then frozen for delivery and drivers with their own vehicles to get them out to the people who need them.”
“Anyone who is available for an average of two hours per week between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday to Friday would be most appreciated,” she notes.
“This is an excellent opportunity for people to give something of themselves in the true holiday spirit by volunteering to assist the frail and most vulnerable members of our community who are most in need.”
The Klein JCC’s Home Delivered Meals Program currently prepares and delivers thousands of meals annually to homebound seniors in the Philadelphia, Bucks and Montgomery County areas.

Mayor Nutter to shop Fishtown on Small Business Saturday
On Saturday, Nov. 30, which is declared “Small Business Saturday,” Mayor Michael Nutter will greet neighbors at Frankford and Girard avenues in Fishtown, from noon to 1 p.m.
The day after Black Friday, score more great shopping deals on East Girard Avenue, Frankford Avenue, Front St. and Kensington Avenue, and Allegheny Avenue.

Council President donates turkeys at LSH in Fishtown
On Wednesday Nov. 20, City Council President Darrell L. Clarke, Councilman At-Large Bill Greenlee and Walmart Stores partnered to distribute a total of 500 Thanksgiving turkeys for local seniors in need.
This year — the seventh year that Council President Clarke and Walmart have worked together to coordinate the event — the local residents received their Thanksgiving turkeys at two locations: Lutheran Settlement House, 1340 Frankford Ave., and Martin Luther King Older Adult Center, 2200 Cecil B. Moore Ave. ••
Hyperion Bank donates to 26th P.D. holiday drive
This holiday season, local families and senior citizens in need will enjoy hot turkey dinners with all the trimmings thanks to the combined efforts of the 26th Police District, Hyperion Bank and its employees.
Working with community relations officer Ed Correa, Hyperion Bank collected non-perishable food donations and raised money from its employees for the purchase of turkeys.
The bank’s employees donated their own money, which the bank matched dollar-for-dollar, for a total of $500.
“Hyperion Bank’s staff never ceases to amaze us with their spirit of giving. Their effort to assist us in raising so much is truly a blessing. Our gratitude to the bank for their efforts year after year to support this community is difficult to put into words,” stated Natalie Davis, Chairperson of the Police Advisory Council (PDAC) for the 26th District.
“I am proud to be associated with my co-workers, whose generosity and spirit of giving is overwhelming. It is our privilege to continue our strong partnership with the fine police officers and the PDAC of the 26th Police District.
