Adoption & grooming event

Poochies Place, 342 W. Girard Ave., will host an adoption and grooming event on Sunday, Jan 19.

Cats and kittens will be available on site and ready for adoption. Grooming for cats and dogs will be 50 percent off and all proceeds will be donated to ACCT Philly, an organization that provides shelter and care for homeless, abandoned and abused animals.

Martin Luther King Day of Service

Art Sphere Inc. is hosting its annual Martin Luther King Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 20 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Fishtown Recreation Center, 1201 E. Montgomery Ave. Volunteers will paint over graffiti and restore ongoing murals, brighten benches and playground equipment, clean the surrounding park and playground and create cards for soldiers and senior citizens. Rizzo PAL sports sign-ups

Rizzo PAL is holding sign-ups for the following activities: NERF soccer for boys and girls age 6 to 8, in-house soccer for girls age 9 to 12, and in-house basketball for boys age 9 to 13. Sign-ups are from 3 to 8 p.m. through Thursday, Jan. 23. There is never a fee to participate in any PAL program. SKCP e-cycling day

On Monday, Jan. 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., recycle your old electronics responsibly as part of this event. Accepted items include cell phones, calculators, laptops, microwaves, cameras and more. Bring items to Finanta, 1301 N. 2nd St. This is a free service sponsored in part by South Kensington Community Partners. Note: there is a $20 charge for recycling CRV-monitors.

PRCG to meet

The Port Richmond Community Group will meet on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. at Our Lady Help of Christians’ Church Hall, Allegheny Avenue at Gaul Street. The group will discuss the progress of the city’s Land Bank creation, as well as changes to State Rep. John Taylor’s scrap metal legislation. A vote for Grace Townhomes will also take place, as well as zoning discussion and vote for a restaurant and bar at 2658 E. Clearfield St. For more information, email [email protected].

Town hall meeting

The 26th Police District and RiverWards Crimewatch will host a town hall meeting covering crime trends and statistics for 2013 on Monday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 418 E. Girard Ave. There will be a presentation followed by a question and answer session. Representatives will be on hand from the 26th Police District as well as the District Attorney’s office.

Cione Rec. Center programs

The Cione after school program now has openings. The program is for children age 5 to 12. It runs Monday to Friday 2:30 to 6 p.m. until Memorial Day. For more information, call Cione at 215–685–9880 or stop by Aramingo and Lehigh avenues.

LSH classes in Fishtown

Lutheran Settlement House, 1340 Frankford Ave., has announced its weekly class schedule: Active Plus (dancercise) with Rita, Mondays, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., $3. Port Richmond Leprechauns sign ups

Basketball sign-ups are taking place now. The clubhouse will be open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 6 to 8 p.m. Ages are 6–18, both boys and girls. Activities at Bridesburg Rec.

Donate new or slightly used children’s books to the “Reach Out & Read” program for ill children. Drop the books off weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Men’s softball teams are wanted for Spring/Summer 2014 sign-ups in wooden bat league, possibly going to single wall bat. For more information, call Dan at 215–604–6004.

Zumba classes are being held Mondays and Thursdays from 7 to 8 p.m. Zumba Toning is on Wednesdays. Cost: $4 per class.

Scrap booking class is Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Cost: $5 per class.

Craft classes in Kensington

Arts and crafts classes for adults are being offered in the Studio at Beacon on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Open studio format means you may come anytime between 6:30 and 8:30 to participate. Mother of Divine Grace Bible study and group sessions

On Wed. evenings through March 12, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Mother of Divine Grace Parish will be conducting a Bible study. The theme will be “Women of the New Testament.” The cost of this study is $12. The parish is also holding a six-week “Catholics Returning Home” program. The session will be held in the rectory, 2918 E. Thompson St., on Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. through Feb. 10. Northeast Catholic Alumni Memorial Scholarship Fund

The fund will be accepting nominations for tuition assistance grants until Jan. 31, 2014. The nominees must be the children or grandchildren of dues-paying members of Northeast Catholic Alumni Association Inc. The fund awards $261,000 in grants each year.
