Kindergarten registration

Kindergarten registration for Hackett School’s 2014–2015 school year begins on Jan. 21 and is ongoing until June.

The kindergarten open house at Hackett, located at 2161 E. York St., will take place on March 4 at 9:15 a.m.

Those not in the Hackett Catchment are asked to check with Friends of Adaire School or H.A Brown School. ••

Rizzo PAL sports sign-ups

Rizzo PAL is holding sign-ups for the following activities: NERF soccer for boys and girls age 6 to 8, in-house soccer for girls age 9 to 12, and in-house basketball for boys age 9 to 13.

Sign-ups are from 3 to 8 p.m. through Thursday, Jan. 23. There is never a fee to participate in any PAL program. For more information, please contact Officer Ernie, Rizzo PAL director, at 215–426–6583. ••

PRCG to meet

The Port Richmond Community Group will meet on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. at Our Lady Help of Christians’ Church Hall, Allegheny Avenue at Gaul Street.

The group will discuss the progress of the city’s Land Bank creation, as well as changes to State Rep. John Taylor’s scrap metal legislation. A vote for Grace Townhomes will also take place, as well as zoning discussion and vote for a restaurant and bar at 2658 E. Clearfield St. For more information, email [email protected]. ••

Local band to play at Mother of Divine Grace

Local band The Exceptions will perform at the Mother of Divine Grace church hall on Saturday, Jan. 25 from 8 p.m. to 12 p.m. Tickets cost $30 and all money raised will go to the Mother of Divine Grace parish and school. Community dinner

On Saturday, Jan. 25, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, 418 E. Girard Ave., in Fishtown, will host a free (no strings attached) community dinner. This is an opportunity for the community to grab a hot, home-cooked meal and share in fellowship with other people. Breakfast at St. Laurentius

Join the students and faculty of St. Laurentius School, Holy Name of Jesus Parish on Sunday, January 26 for a community breakfast celebrating the start of Catholic Schools Week. Breakfast will be served after the 9:30 a.m. Mass in the St. Laurentius Church Hall. Following breakfast, attendees are invited to take a tour of the school featuring the students “It’s A Small World” exhibit. The cost is $10 for adults, $4 for children and St. Laurentius School students are free. The family price is $25. ••

Town hall meeting

The 26th Police District and RiverWards Crimewatch will host a town hall meeting covering crime trends and statistics for 2013 on Monday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 418 E. Girard Ave. There will be a presentation followed by a question and answer session. Representatives will be on hand from the 26th Police District as well as the District Attorney’s office. ••

Flapjack fundraiser

A flapjack fundraiser for the Ladies of Port Richmond Breast Cancer Chapter will be held on Feb. 8 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The cost is $7 per person. It will be held at the Applebee’s located at 2535 Castor Ave. For more information and tickets, contact Mary Lou Leuters at 215–427–3222. ••

KicksUSA Grand Opening

Shoe store KicksUSA in Port Richmond, 2499 Aramingo Ave., will host a free community celebration commemorating its grand opening on Feb. 8 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Hip Hop/R&B radio personality QDeezy of HOT 107.9 FM will be in attendance and KicksUSA will have sales throughout the day. The first 25 people in line will receive a $25 store gift certificate. There will be T-shirts and other giveaways. ••

First-time homebuyers workshop

Concilio hosts a free monthly homeownership workshop to educate the community on how to become successful homeowners and prevent potential foreclosure on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Topics addressed include budgeting, credit repair, mortgage and the purchase process. Philadelphia residents who attend the workshop will potentially be eligible for a city grant that assists qualified purchasers with their home closing costs. Volunteer on the farm

Greensgrow Farms is holding a volunteer day on Feb. 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers are invited to help with winter projects such as cleaning up the property, working on the cutting garden and beds, cleaning and sharpening tools, starting winter pruning tasks and setting up for opening day. Craft classes in Kensington

Arts and crafts classes for adults are being offered in the Studio at Beacon on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Open studio format means you may come anytime between 6:30 and 8:30 to participate.

Northeast Catholic Alumni Memorial Scholarship Fund

The fund will be accepting nominations for tuition assistance grants until Jan. 31, 2014. The nominees must be the children or grandchildren of dues-paying members of Northeast Catholic Alumni Association Inc. The fund awards $261,000 in grants each year.
