Richmond Street closure starts today

A two-year closure of Richmond Street is set to begin Monday, Feb. 3, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced yesterday.

The detour is part of a construction project involving four new overhead Contrail bridges and a sewer main replacement. Richmond Street will be detoured between Lehigh Avenue and Cambria Street, PennDOT said.

The street was originally scheduled to close Jan. 23, but was delayed due to weather conditions.

The detour will take traffic on Richmond Street over Lehigh Avenue, Aramingo Avenue and Allegheny Avenue. Richmond Street will be rebuilt on a new alignment to the east of the existing roadway to make room for a new ramp and other improvements on I-95, PennDOT said.

The Route 15 bus detour starts today, too. Heading north, the bus will stop on Thompson Street at Cumberland Street, Huntingdon Street, Lehigh Avenue, Somerset Street, Monmouth Street, Ann Street, Elkhart Street, Clementine Street and Allegheny Avenue. Heading south, the bus will stop on Aramingo Avenue at Cumberland Street, on Belgrade Street at Aramingo Avenue, Lehigh Avenue, Somerset Street, Cambria Street, Birch Street (on the far side of the street), Indiana Avenue and Clearfield Street and on Allegheny Avenue at Edgemont Street.

The finished project will include two through lanes, a center turn lane, tracks for SEPTA’s Route 15 trolley, northbound and southbound bicycle lanes, sidewalks and decorative street lights, according to PennDOT.

The construction is part of a $91 million project to improve the I-95/Girard Avenue Interchange. The project is scheduled to finish in early 2016, PennDOT said.
