Phillycam recognizes local talent with the First Annual CAMMY Awards

The ceremony will be held on Friday, Oct. 20

PhillyCAM announces the first annual CAMMY Community Recognition Awards on Friday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. at Taller Puertorriqueno (2600 North 5th Street). Recognizing the creativity and commitment of its producers, the CAMMY Awards celebrate members whose television or radio content resonates with the PhillyCAM mission to be a community media center that brings together the people of Philadelphia to make and share media that promotes creative expression, democratic values and civic participation.

The awards are also given to members whose media content exemplifies values of inclusion, collaboration, discovery, learning local focus and quality.

Complete with a red carpet entrance, the evening will kick off with a celebratory cocktail reception at 7 p.m., followed by the awards ceremony beginning at 8 p.m., broadcast live on both PhillyCAM TV and online. Tickets to the event are free for PhillyCAM members, family and friends, and supporters are available at: https://thecammys.eventbrite.com.

This year there will be three main categories and nine total awards. The Creative Expression Category includes a Learning Award, Discovery Award and Technical Quality Award. The Civic Engagement Category features a Community Impact Award, Local Focus Award and Ambassador Award. The Democratic Values Category covers an Inclusion Award, Collaboration Award and Quality of Message Award.

In addition to these three main categories there will be three special awards: the PhillyCAM Peer Recognition Award for Television, the PhillyCAM Peer Recognition Award for Radio, both nominated and voted on by members, and the Vijay Mohan Spirit Award selected by the staff in memory of PhillyCAM staff member Vijay Mohan who was tragically killed in a bicycle accident in 2015.

“We are delighted to be honoring the work of our members who, through their volunteer efforts, do so much to bring quality television and radio programming to the Philadelphia area,” PhillyCAM Executive Director Gretjen Clausing said. “These nominations reflect the diversity and creativity found on PhillyCAM’s cable channels and low power FM radio station WPPM 106.5 FM. We are looking forward to a fun evening where the whole community can recognize their talents.”

Entries for the CAMMY Awards were an audio or video clip that featured a segment from a complete program that was presented on PhillyCAM cable or WPPM radio between October 2009 and June 2017. Cammys awardees are decided by a panel of volunteer judges with expertise in community and independent media making, community organizing and social impact work. Finalists are listed below.

The Cammy Awards coincide with national Community Media Day, a celebration of voices that brings awareness to the importance of free speech and accessible media for all individuals to have their voices heard.

PhillyCAM is a community media center that brings together the people of Philadelphia to make and share media that promotes creative expression, democratic values and civic participation. A leading advocate for discussing issues absent from public dialogue in greater detail and without bias, PhillyCAM teaches people to become creators, not just consumers, of high-quality media.

WPPM-FM’s 90-watt signal reaches about 800,000 people from Center City north to Lehigh Avenue, south to the sports stadiums, west to University City and east to Camden and Cherry Hill. Those outside of the coverage area will be able to listen to WPPM online at https://phillycam.org/radio/listen.
