Thanks to the generosity of a handful of organizations, hundreds of Philadelphia youth will stride into the summer with an essential item: a pair of sneakers.

Last Thursday afternoon, June 24, JEVS Human Services Achievement through Counseling and Treatment Center, 1745 N. Fourth St., hosted Summer Kicks.

The event was the kickoff to a series of shoe-gifting events organized by Glen Mills-based nonprofit Operation Warm.

The nonprofit plans to use the events to help activate communities and provide resources to children and families in need.

Nearly 300 pairs of new shoes were gifted to the event, which was sponsored by Cosmo Cares Foundation.

“We are thrilled to partner with Operation Warm to make an impact on our community – especially this year when more families than ever are in need,” said Cosmo DeNicola, founder at Cosmo Cares and the Cosmo DeNicola Companies. “We believe caring is an action, not an emotion – even a small thing like a pair of shoes can make a difference.”

Toys and other resources were donated by the Ertz Family Foundation, the 26th Police District, the Lillian Marrero Library, Forman Mills, Dunkin’ Donuts and the School District of Philadelphia Office of Family Community and Engagement.

Philadelphia Eagles mascot Swoop also made a guest appearance. ••
