Henon trial underway
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania announced the start of the trial for City Councilman Bobby Henon and electricians union boss John Dougherty.
Jury selection began Monday in what is expected to be a month-long trial in Courtroom 12-B of the federal courthouse at 6th and Market streets.
The government alleges that the defendants were engaged in a scheme in which Henon received a salary, benefits and other items of value from Dougherty, paid for with union funds. In exchange, Henon allegedly used his position to serve Dougherty’s interests within city government.
Henon and Dougherty deny such a scheme.
Columbus Day closing
PennDOT announced that all driver license and photo centers will be closed Saturday, Oct. 9, through Monday, Oct. 11, in observance of Columbus Day.
Customers may still obtain a variety of driver and vehicle products and services, including all forms, publications and driver training manuals, online through PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services website, www.dmv.pa.gov.
Driver and vehicle online services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and include driver’s license, photo ID and vehicle registration renewals; driver-history services; changes of address; driver license and vehicle registration restoration letters; ability to pay driver license or vehicle insurance restoration fee; driver license and photo ID duplicates; and driver exam scheduling.
Donate food at AHCU
American Heritage Credit Union invites the community to take part in its Spirit of Giving Food Drive. All nonperishable food donations will be given out to various food pantries and food banks throughout the community to help families in need this holiday season.
The donations will be collected through Nov. 27 at all American Heritage branch locations. Nonperishable goods such as soups, canned meat and vegetables, rice and pasta are at a higher demand this time of year.
South Port Richmond Civic Association meeting

Groundbreaking for Glavin improvements
Mayor Jim Kenney and City Councilman Bobby Henon last week attended a groundbreaking ceremony for improvements to Frank Glavin Playground, 2600 E. Westmoreland St. in Port Richmond.
“The updates to Glavin Playground will allow our neighbors and community to continue to come together to play and recreate,” Henon said. “I’m excited to join the neighbors of Glavin Playground to celebrate its reopening.”
Glavin Playground, with design led by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, will see improvements like new playgrounds; a shaded seating area; new trees throughout the playground; a renovated recreation building, including new finishes, lighting, windows and ADA restrooms; new heating and cooling systems to accommodate programming year round; and a new sprayground.
New restaurant on Front Street
Restaurateur Stephen Starr is opening LMNO – a new Baja Mexican concept located at 1739-49 N. Front St.
The 6,000-square-foot space, opening Oct. 6, will feature more than 200 seats dispersed across multiple spaces, including a live-fire grill and a bookshop.
The executive chef is Francisco Ramirez.
Plans are for live music, art exhibits, DJ sets, workshops and cooking classes.

Home runs for the homeless
Bethesda Project will host its second annual Home Run 5K as a weekend-long virtual fundraising race from Oct. 7-10, to support its 16 shelters and residences for homeless people.
The Home Run 5K is a 3.1-mile race that individuals can walk, run or bike a course of their choice while simultaneously raising awareness and funds for Bethesda Project’s shelters and programs. Throughout the weekend, racers will track their times while completing the 5K and record their times on the race page for the chance to win prizes, including fastest time, best race photo and most funds raised.
Kicking off the race weekend will be a Home Run 5K Happy Hour on Oct. 7, from 5-7 p.m. at Triple Bottom Brewery, 915 Spring Garden St.
All individuals, even if they will not be racing, are invited to attend. Race participants will receive a drink ticket, which is included in their registration.
New to the race this year is the option to run (and fundraise) as teams. Racers who select to join a team will receive $5 off their registration and should email info@bethesdaproject.org for a team code.

Golf outing to benefit autism school
The 25th annual AJ Foundation Golf 4 Autism will take place on Monday, Oct. 18, at Makefield Highlands Golf Club, 1418 Woodside Road, Yardley.
Proceeds benefit the Comprehensive Learning Center, a private school for individuals with autism opened by the AJ Foundation.
The cost is $200 for one or two rounds of golf, and includes continental breakfast, lunch, cocktail reception and dinner. Refreshments will be served on the course.

New exhibit at revolution museum
The Museum of the American Revolution, 3rd and Chestnut streets, will host an upcoming exhibition, Liberty: Don Troiani’s Paintings of the Revolutionary War, that will feature more than 45 original paintings by artist Don Troiani. The exhibition will run from Oct. 16 to Sept. 5, 2022.
The exhibition will also include artifacts that inspired or appear in his paintings and illuminate the story of each scene. The 40 objects on display will include weapons, military equipment, textiles and manuscripts.
The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Masks are required for all visitors ages 5 and up, regardless of vaccination status. The 5,000-square-foot exhibition will be located in the museum’s first-floor Patriots Gallery.
