A day for veterans
State Rep. Joe Hohenstein held a veterans appreciation barbecue on Sunday at Bridesburg Recreation Center.
City Councilmen David Oh and Mike Driscoll were also on hand. Joe Coyne, of Evryman Jack, entertained the crowd and performed the national anthem, with the colors presented by William D. Oxley American Legion Post 133 and Frankford High School Jr. ROTC.
Vendors offered services for veterans, along with information on state and local programs benefiting veterans and their families. Hohenstein asked the crowd to observe a moment of silence for Bill Volz, a former Simpson Athletic Association soccer coach and Bridesburg American Legion Post 821 commander who passed away on July 11.
Bridesburg Rec Summer Camp
Bridesburg Recreation Center, 4601 Richmond St., is holding summer camp registration.
The three-week session will offer early, day and extended options.
Camp is for youth in kindergarten through sixth grade as of September 2022.
Cost is $90 for early camp, $300 for day camp and $150 for extended camp.
The encampment will run Monday, July 25 to Friday, Aug. 12.

Participate in business conference

The Pennypack Music Festival will take place this year at Cannstatter’s, 9130 Academy Road. Admission is free. There are picnic tables, but you can bring your own chairs. Help the fight against cancer

The Roosevelt Mall Flea Market will run outdoors in the parking lot at 2445 Cottman Ave., every Sunday through November. Bus trip to see murder mystery

Market St., Mount Joy, Lancaster County) for a murder mystery experience on Saturday, Sept. 17. The murder mystery show includes a family-style meal, Catacombs tour and free time to visit the Kitchen Kettle Village. The cost is $160, which includes the motor coach, show and tour. AARP ending tutoring program
The AARP Foundation will be closing four Experience Corps branches, including the one in Philadelphia.
The volunteer program trains people 50 and older to help students become better readers by the end of third grade by building their fluency, accuracy and comprehension skills.
The tutoring is done one on one or in small groups, twice a week for 30 minutes each session.
Emily Allen, Senior Vice President of Programs at AARP Foundation, said, “To reach more schools and students, we are evolving AARP Foundation Experience Corps to implement our work through community-based organizations, building on an existing model we’ve accomplished with 19 Program Partners in 11 states. After careful evaluation, we’ve determined this is the most effective way to increase our impact for both students and volunteers. In this move, AARP Foundation will close four Experience Corps Branches currently staffed by AARP Foundation employees, including Philadelphia, at the end of this program year. We are working to identify Program Partners in Philadelphia to implement our new business model as soon as possible so we can continue serving students in the city.”
