City caves on Tubman statue

The city has caved and decided on a “new direction” for the development of Philadelphia’s permanent Harriet Tubman statue. After outrage by some black artists and City Council members, the city has decided to initiate an open call for artists to commission the statue, which will be located outside City Hall. The city hosted a temporary Tubman statue by white artist Wesley Wofford at City Hall earlier this year, then commissioned Wofford to create a permanent statue. Now, the city said priority for the new statue “will be given to artists who reflect the diversity of Philadelphia. Minority, local and female artists are strongly encouraged to apply.”

Jehovah’s Witnesses back to door-to-door ministry

Jehovah’s Witnesses have resumed their trademark door-to-door ministry, lifting a two-and-half-year suspension of the work. The global campaign will feature a new interactive Bible study program.

In all, there are 1.3 million Jehovah’s Witnesses in 13,000 congregations in the United States.

The pandemic forced Jehovah’s Witnesses to quickly pivot to virtual meetings and

conventions, while conducting their ministry exclusively through letters, phone calls and

virtual Bible studies. This has led to growth in meeting attendance and the number of

congregants, with more than 400,000 newly baptized witnesses joining the ranks of

120,000 congregations globally in just the first two years of the pandemic.

For more information about Jehovah’s Witnesses, their history, beliefs and activities, visit jw.org, with content available in more than 1,000 languages.
