The Fishtown Business Improvement District and Delaware River Waterfront Corporation were presented funding totaling $1.75 million by Congressman Brendan Boyle to help extend the Delaware River Trail for the benefit of area residents.

This funding will enable the Fishtown BID to expand its Frankford Avenue Connector project, which makes significant improvements to Frankford Avenue between Girard Avenue and the Delaware River Trail.

Improvements include beautification efforts and enhanced connectivity between the heart of Fishtown, the Delaware River Trail and waterfront.

The funding also allows DRWC to extend the Delaware River Trail north of Penn Treaty Park past the newly reconstructed Battery development.

Fishtown and Northern Liberties residents use the trail to bike, run, walk and generally enjoy the natural beauty of the Delaware River.

The Fishtown BID will receive a community project funding (formerly known as earmarks) check from Boyle for $750,000 for its Frankford Avenue Connector Project to provide safe and attractive passage for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists between the neighborhood and the river.

The project uses the spaces under I-95, pedestrian openings along Delaware Avenue and Delaware River trail to allow for public use and a connecting pedestrian walkway to the river for the entire region to enjoy.

The DRWC will receive $1 million for its Delaware River Trail Project, which extends the Trail along a recently acquired public easement adjacent to the Battery.

This phase of the project extends the Delaware River Trail from where it currently terminates at Penn Treaty Park an additional 1,000 feet. ••
