In Philadelphia’s Norris Square neighborhood, Shannon Turner, a celebrated singer, vocal coach, and founder of the band Glitter and Garbage, is transforming the local music scene.

Known for her dynamic performances and award-winning vocal coaching, Turner has become an inspiration for aspiring artists despite the challenges she faces due to partial paralysis and autoimmune diseases.

Her journey into music began in her youth, and it was driven by a natural affinity for singing and performing.

Her ability to adapt her voice to genres ranging from jazz to metal and her deep connection with audiences through cabaret-style performances have set her apart in the industry.

In 2015, Turner’s win in a cabaret competition marked the inception of Glitter and Garbage.

The band, reimagined in 2017 with her collaborator Lili St Queer, blends humor, theatricality, and genre-defying arrangements.

Turner credits St Queer’s talent as a musician, composer, and arranger as integral to the band’s success.

In addition to performing, Turner dedicates herself to empowering other musicians.

Recognized as Philly Magazine’s Best Vocal Coach in 2023, she helps artists hone their skills while sharing insights gained from her extensive career.

Her coaching journey began in 2018 at Eastern State Penitentiary’s “Speakeasy” attraction and grew into a thriving practice by 2022.

With a commitment to education and a vision to make free music resources more accessible, Turner advocates for aspiring artists in East Kensington and beyond.

Turner’s advocacy also supports North Philly nonprofit organizations focused on music and inclusivity.

Balancing her dynamic disability, she inspires individuals of all abilities to pursue their passions.

Her recent performances include the “Very Pure, Very Filthy” event at the Black Squirrel, inspired by filmmaker David Lynch, and a guest appearance at the sold-out Martha Graham Cracker Cabaret at Franky Bradley’s in Center City.

Shannon Turner proves that with creativity and a focus on inclusivity, music can bring people together and inspire.
