Philadelphia’s jazz culture has deepened with the arrival of two new venues, Black Squirrel Club in Fishtown and Cellar Dog in Center City.
The venues join a legacy of iconic jazz spots in the city, such as Chris’ Jazz Café and South.
The Black Squirrel Club, located at 1045 Sarah Street in Fishtown, has an eclectic charm.
Its design, spearheaded by executive director Gabor S. Antalics, incorporates distinctive elements like a Warren Muller chandelier, a vintage piano, and church pew seating.
Originally a private club, Black Squirrel has evolved into a lively venue featuring everything from jazz jam sessions to quartets and everything in between.
According to Antalics, the club’s appeal lies in its organic development.
Talent booker Ben Orlock makes the club a place where Philly’s jazz scene meets big-name acts from across the country.
The Monday Night Jam sessions have become a cornerstone, as it draws in young jazz lovers from all over.
Recent performers include notable jazz figures like Jeff “Tain” Watts and William Parker, with plans for expanding the roster.
Meanwhile, Cellar Dog at 258 S. 15th Street offers a different take on the jazz experience.
Combining a laid-back vibe with world-class performances, it’s a multi-use venue featuring pool tables, ping pong, arcade games, and a menu of comfort food like fried Twinkies and short rib Sloppy Joes.
Owner Arthur Backal and music director Ehud Asherie aim to bridge the jazz scenes of New York and Philadelphia.
Cellar Dog also boasts an impressive collection of rare instruments, including a vintage 1945 Steinway piano and a 1978 A-100 organ.
On opening night, a spontaneous sextet of local and national talent set the tone for what the venue promises to be—a space where live Philly music is celebrated in a relaxed, inviting environment.
With their unique offerings, the Black Squirrel Club and Cellar Dog add fresh energy to Philadelphia’s enduring jazz scene, continuing a rich tradition while pushing its boundaries.
