Artist Betsy Casañas is painting a large-scale mural featuring Fairtrade banana farmer Mariana Cobos at Riverwards Produce’s Fishtown location (2200 E. Norris St.) in preparation for October Fairtrade Month celebrations in Philadelphia and nationwide.

Fairtrade America is commissioning new murals in Philadelphia, Providence and Lawrence, Kansas for its fourth annual Fairtrade Month mural campaign, “We Are Fairtrade.” Existing murals are in Austin, Denver, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Nashville, Tacoma, Portland, Atlanta and Milwaukee.

The mural will officially be unveiled at Riverwards Produce Market’s Fairtrade Month celebration on Saturday, Oct. 14, during a block party outside Riverwards Produce’s Fishtown location. The all-ages block party will see the street shut down from noon to 6 p.m. A number of local food trucks (including Victoria en Philly with Mexican street food) will be on hand, as will Dript Coffee, PlayArts (hosting pumpkin painting), Bake Bake providing sweet fall treats and more. ••
