Hosted by Mural Arts Philadelphia’s Monument Lab
As part of Mural Arts Philadelphia’s Monument Lab, a public art and history project produced by Mural Arts Philadelphia and a team led by curators Paul Farber and Ken Lum, 10 sites have been selected for “Saturday Spotlight” events. On Saturday, Sept. 30, Penn Treaty Park will be highlighted.
The Monument Lab project, which began on Saturday, Sept. 16, will run through Saturday, Nov. 19, and will include 20 artists. At each event, which is meant to be a celebration of the nearby artwork and its respective artists, as well as the neighborhoods and communities where we have been working, artists from Philadelphia and around the world will create temporary artwork that answers a central question: What is an appropriate monument for the city of Philadelphia?
In addition to this artwork, Mural Arts will be producing interactive “labs” at each site, including the one at Penn Treaty Park. This specific event will focus on temporary monuments created by artists Duane Linklater and RAIR Philly (led by artists William Blaise Dufala and Lucia Thomé). Linklater’s work at Penn Treaty Park sheds light on the treaty referenced in the park’s name, between William Penn and Lenape Chief Tamanend, while RAIR’s project evokes the tension between Philadelphia’s green spaces and escalating development.
