On March 20, State Sen. Mike Stack honored two local residents for their efforts to end hunger.

Forty-one local ShopRite stores — including the store at 3745 Aramingo Ave. — won the ShopRite Partners in Caring Contest, an annual competition that raises funds and collects donations during September’s National Hunger Awareness Month.

Store associates Jim Dawson, of Northeast Philly, and Shawn Easter, of Bridesburg, will represent their store in a picture that will be featured on 125,000 special-edition Cheerios boxes to be sold exclusively at ShopRite stores during the month of March.

This year’s contest raised more than $1 million for regional food banks.

In other neighborhood news, Port Richmond Elementary School students made their yearly pilgrimage to Applebee’s to share their artistic abilities on March 20.

The Port Richmond Applebee’s, 2535 Castor Ave., invited students from the school to decorate the restaurant’s windows for spring.

Twenty-seven students from Ms. Braun’s 3rd grade class attended and painted the windows with spring scenes. Now, 12 of the 13 windows in the restaurant are decorated with the young students’ art in celebration of the change in season. Happy spring!
