Northeast Catholic Alumni Memorial Scholarship Fund

The fund will be accepting nominations for tuition assistance grants until Jan. 31, 2014. The nominees must be the children or grandchildren of dues-paying members of Northeast Catholic Alumni Association Inc. The fund awards $261,000 in grants each year. SNBL meeting

Somerset Neighbors for Better Living’s monthly meeting will be on Monday, Feb. 3, at 6:30 p.m. at Community Women’s Education Project, 2801 Frankford Ave. Learn about resident issues with guest speakers and voice your opinions about neighborhood issues related to greening, safety, and more. The 24th Police District will answer questions and take suggestions from neighbors as well as report out about safety. Fishtown zoning meetings

The Fishtown Neighbors Association zoning committee will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 7 p.m. at the Fishtown Recreation Center, 1202 E. Montgomery Ave.

Fishtown residents will vote on a proposal for a non-accessory off-street parking space at 304 E. Girard Ave. and a proposal for two single-family homes with off-street parking at 1401 E. Columbia Ave. and 407 Belgrade St. Bring proof of residence or business ownership in the form of a driver’s license or a photo identification and a lease, utility bill or recent piece of mail addressed to your home or business. ••

Flapjack fundraiser

A flapjack fundraiser for the Ladies of Port Richmond Breast Cancer Chapter will be held on Feb. 8 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The cost is $7 per person. It will be held at the Applebee’s located at 2535 Castor Ave. For more information and tickets, contact Mary Lou Leuters at 215–427–3222. ••

KicksUSA Grand Opening

Shoe store KicksUSA in Port Richmond, 2499 Aramingo Ave., will host a free community celebration commemorating its grand opening on Feb. 8 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Hip Hop/R&B radio personality QDeezy of HOT 107.9 FM will be in attendance and KicksUSA will have sales throughout the day. The first 25 people in line will receive a $25 store gift certificate. There will be T-shirts and other giveaways. ••

Knife technique workshop

Learn how to sharpen your dull knives at a knife technique and sharpening workshop at Greensgrow Farms on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 12 to 2 p.m. Bring a dull chef’s knife (5”-10”) and leave with a sharp tool and the knowledge of how to care for it and keep it sharp. In this hands-on workshop, Chef Denine Gorniak will teach basic chopping and prep techniques and what knifes and equipment are best for the job. Registration is required and costs $20. Soup and salad dinner

Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Francis De Sales #2617 is hosting a soup and salad supper on Sunday, Feb. 9 from 3 to 6 p.m. at St. Joachim Church, 1527 Church Street. Enjoy a buffet with a variety of hot, homemade soups, hearty bread and rolls, salad and desserts along with family entertainment. The cost for adults is $8; children are $4. People are asked to bring canned goods for the food cupboard in order to receive a free raffle ticket. ••

Port Richmond meeting

The next PROPAC / Port Richmond Town Watch Meeting will be held on Thursday, February 6, at 7 p.m., at Samuel Recreation Center, 3539 Gaul St.

Guest speakers are Senator Mike Stack, Councilman Mark Squilla and Rep. John Taylor.

Zoning issues will be discussed, including 2658 E. Clearfield St., 2701 Seltzer St., and 3178 Amber St.

Jeanette Burns Arthur from North American Power will talk about switching energy providers — bring a copy of your PECO bill to see the savings available. Officer Tina Willis will discuss PSA-3 crime stats and updates. ••

First-time homebuyers workshop

Concilio hosts a free monthly homeownership workshop to educate the community on how to become successful homeowners and prevent potential foreclosure on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Topics addressed include budgeting, credit repair, mortgage and the purchase process.

Philadelphia residents who attend the workshop will potentially be eligible for a city grant that assists qualified purchasers with their home closing costs. Volunteer on the farm

Greensgrow Farms is holding a volunteer day on Feb. 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers are invited to help with winter projects such as cleaning up the property, working on the cutting garden and beds, cleaning and sharpening tools, starting winter pruning tasks and setting up for opening day. Free Tax Preparation

Concilio will host Free Tax Preparation every Wednesday in February in collaboration with the Ceiba Coalition.

Families with incomes of less than $52,000 per year can maximize their tax returns with free expert tax preparation, through the Earned Income Tax Credit, child care expenses, and other allowable expenses.
