Fishtown Library events

Fishtown Library, 1217 E. Montgomery Ave., will host PAWS Read to a Dog on Wednesdays, July 26, Aug. 9 and 23, at 1 p.m. with therapy dog, Keeva. Open to all ages. For more details, call 215–685–9990.

American Street open houses

The Philadelphia Water and Streets departments will host open houses regarding improvements planned for American Street on Wednesday, July 26, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Crane Arts, 1400 N. Moana movie night

Friends of Penn Treaty Park, 1199 N. Delaware Ave., will host a movie night on Wednesday, July 26, at 8 p.m. Free refreshments will be available. Moana will be screened. Moana will be at the park at 7 p.m. for pictures and interaction with guests. The event is sponsored by Philadelphia Parks and Recreation, the Penn Treaty Special Services District and the Fairmount Park Conservancy.

DRCC free outdoor movie series

The Delaware River City Corporation will host its 3rd annual Free Outdoor Summer Movie Series at on Thursdays at sundown in the field at Pennypack on the Delaware Park State Road and Pennypack Path. The remaining lineup includes “Lilo and Stitch” on July 27, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” on Aug. 20, “Finding Dory” on Aug. 27, and “Jurassic Park” on Aug. 24. All movies begin at sundown. Family friendly activities will be planned prior to the start of each movie. Free event open to all ages, blankets and chairs welcome. Rain dates TBD. Romeo and Juliet

Friends of Penn Treaty Park, 1199 N. Delaware Ave., will host an evening of Shakespeare in the park on Thursday, July 27, at 7 p.m. The Commonwealth Classic Theater will present the Bard’s Romeo and Juliet. Bring a blanket and refreshments. The event is sponsored by the Penn Treaty Special Services District and Johnny Brenda’s.

Sean Daily Tournament

The Port Richmond Tigers will host the 29th annual Sean Daily Memorial Sports Tournament on Friday, July 28, Saturdayday, July 29 and Sunday, July 30 at Cohox playground, Cedar and Ann streets. Events will include softball, basketball, soccer (all ages), and women’s volleyball. Teams should register at the Clubhouse by Friday, July 21. Nature Heroes

Friends of Penn Treaty Park board member Sandi Vincenti will present the next editions of Nature Heroes, “Beautiful Birds 2.0,” at Arcadia Commons, 2555 Kern St., on Sunday, July 30 at noon and “Insects, Arachnids and Diplopods, Oh My,” at Penn Treaty Park, 1199 N. Delaware Ave., on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 4:30 p.m.

FNA zoning meeting

The Fishtown Neighbors Association will hold a zoning meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. at the Fishtown Recreation Center, 1202 E. Montgomery Ave. Voting will take place on a proposal for legalizing an existing three-story rear addition at 812 Gaul St., a proposal for a new multi-family residential structure with two dwelling units, and a proposal for a new single family residential structure with pilot house and roof deck at 1106 E. Susquehanna Ave. All residents and business owners in Fishtown are eligible to vote. Please bring proof of residence or business ownership.

Aqua String Band concert

Aqua String Band will host its annual Bridesburg Community Concert on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. at Bridesburg Recreation Center, 4601 Richmond St., on the front lawn. Horseshoe tournament

On Saturday September 16th 2017, The Bridesburg Lawton VFW Post #2 will host its annual Horseshoe Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Post, 4638 Richmond St. The event will be begin at 9 a.m. Register for the contest at the Post any day after 3 p.m. Spots fill quickly, so register early. Ryan Kelly memorial fundraiser

The 2nd annual Ryan Kelly Beef and Beer will be held on Friday, Oct. 6, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Southhampton Room, 2980 Southhampton Road. Tickets are $30. Football and cheer registration

Football and cheer registration is now open for The Leprechaun Sports Association. Registration for football is open to all new and returning football players ages 5 to 13. Registration fee is $100 and helmets are $80. Registration for cheer is open to all new and returning cheerleaders ages 5 to 12. Registration fee is $95. Flea market

North Catholic Atlantic City trip

The North Catholic Alumni Association is sponsoring a trip to Atlantic City on Monday, Aug. 7. A bus will depart the alumni association office at Rhawn and Fairfield street at 9 a.m. The day will start with a one-hour boat ride on the Atlantic City Cruise. Next will be a four-hour stay at Resorts Casino, with $25 slot cash. The day will end with an all-you-can-eat dinner and unlimited wine at Renault Winery. CareerLink workshops

CareerLink will provide enhanced career services and work-based trainings at the Fishtown Library, 1217 E. Montgomery Ave on Tuesdays, Aug. 8., Oct. 3, Nov. 7 and Dec. 26, from noon to 5 p.m. The sessions will build skill development and offer employment resources as well as connect individuals seeking services with the resources and capabilities of the PA CareerLink system. Doo Wop festival

The Philadelphia Doo Wop Festival will be held on Sunday, September 10, from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 5, 11630 Caroline Road. There will be 12 of the areas top vocal groups, Philly’s best oldies disc jockeys and a 5-hour indoor dance party. Admission is $25.00 and includes food, draft beer & soda. All proceeds benefit the Philadelphia FOP Survivors Fund.

Senior produce vouchers

Philadelphia seniors ages 60 and older can now receive $20 in vouchers for fresh produce from Philadelphia Corporation for Aging. The vouchers can be used to purchase fresh Pennsylvania-grown produce sold at 55 certified farmers’ markets in Philadelphia. Income-eligible Philadelphia residents, who will be age 60 or older by Dec. 31, may receive the vouchers at PCA, 642 North Broad St. on weekdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; except Thursday, June 22, and at other designated sites. Tot rec program

The Bridesburg Recreation Center, 4625 Richmond St., tot program will begin in September. Child must be of age as of Sept. 1. Lou and Lynn Iatarola are planning a book on Veterans Stadium, and are asking the public to submit photos.The Iatarolas are looking for images related to sporting events, concerts and special events held at the Vet as well as demolition photos and images of the stadium area before and during construction. Game night

Friends of Penn Treaty School and Circle of Hope host a monthly family and teen friendly game night on the fourth Friday of every month from 6 to 9 p.m. at 2007 Frankford Ave. Games & snacks are provided, but guests are welcome to bring more.

Fishtown Library, 1217 E. Montgomery Ave., will hold toddler storytime on Tuesdays, at 10:30 a.m. for ages 0 to 3 1/2.

The Bridesburg Recreation Center, 4625 Richmond St., is collecting aluminum tabs. The collection benefits the Ronald McDonald House.

Cione Playground programs

Cione Playground, 2600 Aramingo Ave., is offering programs to the public. Zumba classes will be held on Fridays, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. and cost is $5 per class. Free arts and crafts for kids ages 5 to 12 will take place on Saturdays, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Flag Football for kids 10 to 12. Cost is $5. Glavin Playground programs

Frank Glavin “A&W” Playground is offering the following programs. Improv for Kids is held on Thursdays, from 6:30 to 7:30, for children ages 8 to 12. The drama program aims to improve self-confidence, social skills and teach kids how to make up silly scenes on the spot. Fee is $40 for eight weeks. Advance registration is required. Book Club for youth ages 6 and over will be held on Mondays, from 6 to 6:30 p.m. with Miss Bridget. Program is free. Chess Club for youth ages 6 and older will be held on Tuesdays, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Participants will learn the basics of chess and strategies to improve. Cost is $20 for eight weeks. Food pantry hours change

St. Michael’s Church, Trenton Avenue and Cumberland Street, has revised hours for the weekly food pantry distributions. Distribution hours are from 11 a.m. to noon. There will no longer be evening hours. Members from the 19125 and 19134 may come twice a month or three times a month if a month has five Thursdays. For details, call 215–423–0792.

Nutrition assistance for seniors

Residents 60 and older who are disabled and have low to modest income may be eligible for SNAP benefits. If you are single and your income is less than $1962 a month, or less than $2656 a month for a couple, you may qualify. There is no limit on how much a senior has in savings and checking accounts. For assistance in completing an application, schedule an appointment with the Social Service Coordinator at St. Anne’s Senior Center, 2607 E. Cumberland St., 215–426–9799.

Women self-defense classes

Women self-defense classes will be held at Fishtown Recreation Center, 1202 E. Montgomery Ave., on Tuesdays, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $10 per class. Course certification available. Yoga at Towey Rec

Support group

Lost parents and family members group meets every third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at Cione Recreation Center, Lehigh and Aramingo avenues. Anyone who is suffering from the loss of a loved one, friend or whoever is welcome.

Bridesburg food pantry

Bridesburg Recreation Center, 4625 Richmond St., is accepting nonperishable food and clothing donations for the needy in the neighborhood. Donations can be dropped off on weekdays, between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Kirtan class

MotherHeart Studio, 2359 E. Susquehanna Ave., welcomes everyone in the neighborhood to take part in MotherHeart Kirtan. Kirtan is the recitation of spiritual ideas through songs of devotion. Style is call and response singing of mantra and sounds.Event begins at 7:15 p.m on every second Friday of the month. Donation only.

Bingo at Ukrainian Cathedral

Exercise classes for people 50 and older will be offered at St. Anne’s Senior Center, 2607 E. Cumberland St. Class schedule will be Enhance-Fitness on Mondays at 12:30 p.m., Thursdays at 11 a.m., and Fridays, at 10:30 a.m., Chair Yoga on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. (except the second Tuesday of each month), and Tai Chi on Wednesdays at 10 a.m.

Creative art classes

St. Anne’s Senior Center, 2607 E. Cumberland St., is offering creative workshops for individuals ages 50 and older. Clay Creations will be held on Fridays, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Creating with the Color Wheel, an interactive painting class with Michael Secor, will be held on Tuesdays, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Registration required. Bridesburg Recreation Center, 4625 Richmond St., has patriotic, police, firemen, breast cancer bows and Bridesburg pride banners available for purchase. . Bows and banners cost $3 each and can be purchased any weekday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Orders for bows for special events are available with three-day delivery. Marine veterans group
