Rockin’ around the Fishtown tree

Holly, jolly Jawnaments: New to this year’s lineup is a parking ticket, MELISSA KOMAR / STAR PHOTO

It’s common Philly knowledge how unforgiving the Philadelphia Parking Authority is, and now you can be just as brazen in handing out those tell-tale blue and white tickets.

In ornament form.

Longtime River Wards resident Susan Murphy, 55, once again is offering the gift of Jawnaments, laser-cut tree trimmings of iconic Fishtown and Philly objects.

What started in 2017 with a picture of an Arctic Splash, Shrinky Dink paper and a toaster oven has morphed into selling hundreds of custom art applied to one-eighth-inch birch wood and laser cut at NextFab in South Philly up until Dec. 21.

The process “ensures consistency and efficiency” and has allowed for the expansion of the collection, according to Murphy.

“I added things that are very ‘Philly’ and, things that I personally love. I had ideas from last Christmas and then asked for input from area Facebook groups, neighbors and friends,” Murphy said. “Sometimes an idea just hits me.”

Like that craving for caffeine hits cup of Joe aficionados in the a.m.

There’s a Wawa coffee cup ornament for that.

Grandma’s got a sweet tooth?

There are Tastykake peanut butter kandykakes, butterscotch krimpets and even Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews for that.

Hubby a die-hard Philly sports fan?

He’ll be sure to recognize Philly’s newest, googly-eyed, fire-hydrant orange mascot.

Friends into the dive-bar scene?

There’s a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon and a shot, of course, for that.

And, how about the foodie in your life?

If they’re from Philly or live here or have ever heard of it, the only proper cuisine to offer them is a hoagie and a soft pretzel, topped with mustard.

Not to be forgotten is the Jawnament that started it all, Fishtown’s holy wooder, the Arctic Splash.

Other ornaments new to the lineup this year include the parking violation ticket, a Philadelphia Water Department orange cone and a red and white “No Parking” poster.

Some classics return, too, including the shad 19125 and the SEPTA trolley.

A portion of proceeds for select Jawnaments will benefit the Fishtown Neighbors Association and MANNA.

“I chose FNA because I figured, ‘If Fishtown residents are purchasing Jawnaments, I should give back to their neighborhood.’  I chose MANNA because I volunteer with them every year to deliver Thanksgiving dinners and I believe in their mission and how they serve residents all over Philly,” Murphy said.

For Murphy, being able to give back while channeling her artistic side is just as much a gift for herself as the people purchasing the ornaments.

“It’s a great creative outlet for me personally and it’s very satisfying to make something unique for folks in the neighborhood,” she said. “I am truly humbled that they’ve become so popular.”
