Adult classes starting in January at Portside

A new series of adult classes will begin in January at Portside Arts Center, 2531 E. Lehigh Ave.

Upholstery will be held on Tuesdays, from Jan. 7 to March 10, from 6 to 9 p.m.; Wednesdays, from Jan. 8 to March 11, from 6 to 9 p.m.; and Saturdays, from Jan. 11 from Feb. 29, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Mosaics: Hand On will be held on Thursdays, from Jan. 8 to 30, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The Art of Stained Glass will be held on Thursdays, from Feb. 6 to 27, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Bingo at St. Michael’s Church

Bingo will be held at St. Michael’s Church, Trenton Avenue and Cumberland Street, on Saturday, Dec. 21, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Doors open at noon. Packages are $20 and include lunch.

 

Breakfast with Santa at Post 821

Bridesburg American Legion Post 821, 4404 Salmon St., will host Breakfast with Santa on Sunday, Dec. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Santa arrives at 10 a.m. Breakfast includes pancakes, eggs, sausage and potatoes.

Tickets cost $6 for adults and $4 for kids. ••

S. Phila. High Class of ‘68 celebrating turning 70

Members of the South Philadelphia High School Class of 1968 will celebrate turning 70 years old at a buffet luncheon on Saturday, Oct. 24, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Waterfall Room, 2015 S. Water St.

Tickets cost $55 and include an open bar.

The luncheon is open to all classes of South Philadelphia High.

Checks can be made payable to SPHS Class of 1968 and mailed to Maria Leati, 26 Old Republic Lane, Marlton, NJ 08053.

Adult Zumba classes at Bridesburg Rec

Bridesburg Recreation Center, 4601 Richmond St., will offer adult Zumba classes on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m.

Cost is $4. ••

Call for food, clothing donations

Bridesburg Recreation Center, 4601 Richmond St., is collecting nonperishable food and clothing for the needy in the neighborhood. Donations can be dropped off at the rec center weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. For details, call Miss Jackie at 215-685-1247. ••

Port Richmond Neighborhood Association meeting

Port Richmond Neighborhood Association meetings will be held on the first Monday of each month at Cohocksink Rec Center, Cedar and Cambria streets, at 7 p.m.

All Port Richmond business owners and residents welcome.

The goal of the group is to unite the neighborhood in every positive way possible. ••

Fuel assistance program now available

To assist people with home heating costs, the Pennsylvania Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is now in progress. This fuel assistance program is available to people of all ages who meet the income guidelines. For example, individuals with a monthly income under $1,591.00 or a two-person household with a monthly income under $2,113.00 qualify for the grant.

To receive an application or for additional information about income guidelines, call United Social Services at 215-923-1900, Monday through Friday, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

A staff worker will explain the eligibility requirements, answer questions and assist in completing an application. This is an annual grant provided to all who qualify, and does not have to be repaid. All inquiries are strictly confidential.

Veterans needed to volunteer

Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care is seeking veterans to volunteer to help support patients who are veterans.

“At Crossroads, we honor all veterans, and this is a great opportunity for them to volunteer to support their fellow veterans at the end of life by offering companionship and that special veteran camaraderie,” said volunteer manager Kimberly Mumper. “We call our Crossroads volunteers ‘Ultimate Givers’ because they give the greatest gift of their time and gain the satisfaction of knowing they helped make a fellow veteran’s day a little brighter.”

EnhanceFitness Class at LSH

Lutheran Settlement House, at 1340 Frankford Ave. in Fishtown, is offering an EnhanceFitness Class on Tuesdays from 10 to 11 a.m. and Fridays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

The program focuses on stretching, flexibility, balance strengthening and low-impact aerobics exercises for active older adults at any fitness level. EnhanceFitness provides a challenging yet safe environment for the unfit or near frail. EnhanceFitness is a state Department of Aging evidence-based exercise program.

New art class at Lutheran Settlement House

Lutheran Settlement House, at 1340 Frankford Ave. in Fishtown, will host an art class for individuals 55+ on Mondays from 1 to 2 p.m. Participants can try a variety of fine arts such as painting, sketching and watercolor with guided instruction and expertise.
