Last Friday was the day, the day to remember

The birth of Dr. Seuss, a wordsmith quite clever

To celebrate all one hundred and fourteen of his years

A library hosted a party for kids and their peers

Beloved children’s author Theodor Seuss Geisel, more widely known by his pseudonym, Dr. Seuss, would have celebrated his 114th birthday on Friday, March 2.

Created in 1997, Read Across America Day is an initiative on reading that is observed on Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

On Thursday, March 1, Richmond Library, 2987 Almond St., celebrated the day with a birthday party of epic proportions.

Library supervisor Amy Thatcher and children’s librarian Meghan Dondero got into the Seuss spirit by donning Cat in the Hat hats and reading Dr. Seuss classics to dozens of neighborhood children.

After storytime, games and crafts inspired by Dr. Seuss titles were set up throughout the library.

Children used glue and popsicle sticks to fashion, “One fish, two fish, red fish or blue fish,” cut out Dr. Seuss masks featuring paper plates and Lorax mustaches, pinned “the hat on the cat,” and played “stack the cat’s hat” using red plastic cups.

To top off the fun, children enjoyed pieces of a “Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss” birthday cake.

Check out our March 7 print issue to see photos of all the fun unfolding.
